The Wonder of Thanksgiving

This is a day about giving thanks, sharing time with family and friends, and of course, enjoying the food! Virtually every item served at this meal has some nutritional benefits. Here’s the scoop on your Thanksgiving Day favorites:

  • Green Beans: Whether you start with fresh or frozen, these emerald-green veggies come packed with nutrition – bone-building vitamin K, immune-boosting vitamin C and anti-aging beta-carotene.
  • Cranberries: Studies have long shown that cranberries contain compounds (proanthocyanidins) that help combat urinary tract infections. But new research shows that cranberries may also help oral health by preventing gum disease. With a mere 50 calories per cup, cranberry sauce also counts as a fruit serving!
  • Mashed potatoes and gravy: Almost sounds too good to be true, but mashed potatoes with gravy (made from turkey broth and thickened with flour) supplies vitamin C, potassium and fiber, which all help boost heart health. Be sure to include the potato skins as these contain flavonoids also known for their health-boosting properties.
  • Turkey: A typical 4-ounce serving packs over 50 percent of the Daily Value for protein. Compared to white meat, dark meat contains more of the mineral iron necessary for a healthy circulation. You also get 45 percent of selenium needs, a mineral that is known to play a role in protecting your body against cancer.
  • Pumpkin pie: Save some room for this deliciously nutritious dessert! One slice comes loaded with over 100 percent of your vitamin A needs as beta carotene. This antioxidant has been shown to lessen the visible signs of aging (seconds please!).
