Good morning. I recently spent a few days with a leader with an excellent recipe for successful communication with his team.

It's simple, easy to implement, and extremely effective.

Elevate your leadership

This leader developed a simple and effective feedback loop.

Each day, as he rounds, he greets each employee and asks the same questions at the end of the conversation.

"What can I do to help you better do your job?"

Then, he listens intently and notes the answer on a small notepad he keeps in his pocket.

Every Friday, the team huddles for a quick staff meeting where the leadership team reviews each answer they received and communicates the follow-up and response.  He calls it, "You've asked, we've responded."

Over the past month, they've collected and acted upon the following feedback.

A caregiver mentioned that an additional mechanical lift on the neighborhood would help alleviate delays in getting residents ready at their desired times.  They purchased another lift.

An employee mentioned that a resident asks for grits for breakfast every morning, but it's not on the menu daily.  The culinary team now has grits on the menu every day for breakfast.

Another caregiver mentioned that a resident would benefit from a different bed where the head of the bed can elevate.  With the help of a therapist and to the resident's delight, they replaced the resident's bed.

An employee complemented the NHA on his company-branded pullover, so he purchased several to be given out for employee appreciation. 

The team feels heard.  The team knows it's safe to speak up.  The team trusts their leaders.

It's simple, and it works.
