The Hashtag

One of the most important elements of any integrated PR campaign is social media – Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.

Twitter hashtags are now one of the most effective ways to start an online conversation, where the message will not only reach your followers, but everyone who is keeping an eye on the topic.

A hashtag strategy is always important for PR events, press days and launches – the aim is to try and get the event / launch trending. Andrea Britton of Social Media Today has some great top tips that will stand the test of time.

1. Begin your hashtag a few weeks before the actual event and hook people into the mystery / information / fun / emotion, etc.
2. Use the hashtag in the title of your event! This will go on all promo material, on and offline.
3. During the event, don’t forget the hashtag! Live tweeting from an event is on the money, will get all the ‘back row’ folk interested and wishing they’d have parted with their cash!
4. Use brand association where possible. For example, what brands, services, other events, people fit your event? Who would be interested? Get in touch with them and work out a mutually beneficial collaboration to expand your reach.
5. Monitor your own hashtag. Search it online, on all channels and see if anyone is mentioning you!
6. After the event, create a transcript from Twitter so people can catch up or analyse.
7. Lastly, now you can analyse all the great information you’ve collected. There are Twitter tools that can help you analyse hashtag streams and most are free!

BEBO IS BACK!

Bebo, which was huge in Ireland in 2007/2008, is back! The original founders, Michael Birch and his wife Xochi, have promised to relaunch a newer cleaner looking site with fewer members. At the peak of its popularity, Bebo had over 40 million users, but its popularity began to decline with the growth of Facebook and Twitter.

WESTIN / UNICEF ROAD TO AWARENESS

The Westin Hotel put its foot to the pedal this month, as it hosted a charity cycle from Dublin to Athlone in aid of UNICEF, in support of ‘Road to Awareness’, Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ annual associate fundraising campaign. Now in its 6th year, the campaign aims to raise US$500,000 / €375,000 for UNICEF, the world’s leading organisation for children. The money raised will go towards education projects in Nigeria and Cameroon, giving thousands of children from some of the poorest and most remote communities, the opportunity to go to school and get a better start in life.
