Wine of the Weekend

Santa Julia Reserva Malbec 2015 Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina

Here’s another benchmark grape and country combination that should be on your bucket list of wines to try. Like Australian Shiraz, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and Chilean Carmenere, Malbec is synonymous with Argentina and is considered that country’s calling-card grape. The wine is fun, approachable and completely charming. Share it with friends and keep exploring!

Tasting Notes: This Malbec is deep, dark purple-red in colour. Blackberry, plum and vanilla dominate the nose with hints of leather, spice and cassis in the background. This medium-bodied red is deceptively rich on the palate with intense flavours of dark ripe fruit and well-structured tannins which are perfectly balanced by fresh, plum-like acidity that finishes long with notes of coffee and spice.

Enjoy With: Grilled red meat, sausages, BBQ ribs, pizza or all by itself.

Style: Medium-bodied and fruity red wine.

Terroir/Region: Malbec is perfectly suited to the growing conditions on the high-altitude plains of Mendoza where dry growing conditions, abundant sunshine and a long growing season help the grapes reach their full ripening potential. Vines are planted on the mineral rich alluvial plains at the foothills of the Andes and are irrigated using fresh mountain water.

Producer: Santa Julia is a modern, progressive winery that puts sustainability at the core of everything it does. From grape growing all the way through the wine-making process, everything is done in a manner that has as little impact as possible. The estate also provides care and support for the surrounding community in Mendoza through numerous initiatives including healthcare and education.
