The Wonder of Chicken
Think versatile, budget friendly, nutritious and hearty — that’s chicken! Many of us have always enjoyed chicken as a mainstay meat in our diet. You likely need no convincing about how wonderful chicken is, but just in case, check out these chicken facts that might be surprising:
Superior protein: Both dark (thigh and drumstick) and light (breast) meat are loaded with excellent quality protein. A four-ounce roasted chicken breast packs a whopping 65 percent of your daily value for protein. Adding cooked chicken to pasta or other grain dishes is an excellent way to slip in much-needed protein for children and active teens.
Wealth of minerals: Chicken supplies a host of minerals, including selenium, iron and zinc. One chicken breast meets 30 percent of selenium needs, and it also helps protect your body by supporting a strong immune system and a healthy circulation.
B-vitamins bonanza: One serving of chicken contains more than 70 percent of niacin and 20 percent of B6 needs. These B vitamins play an important role in heart health as well as streamlining your muscles’ ability to burn body fat and metabolize other fuels.
Healthy fat: Chicken is lower in fat (and artery-clogging saturated fat) than many cuts of beef. But it’s important to remove the skin before cooking chicken to keep fat levels low.
Uses for chicken are endless — it’s great in stir fry dishes, pasta, stews, casseroles, soups and more. Enjoy chicken in your next meal!
