De Grendel Sauvignon Blanc 2016

The Toronto South African film festival is happening this weekend at the TIFF Lightbox, showcasing a variety of South African themed films and documentaries. That makes it a great time to explore another facet of South Africa’s culture - its wines! The perfect sipping wine for this weekend is the flavourful and aromatic De Grendel Sauvignon Blanc. Experience a new side of South Africa with a fine movie and a delicious glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

Tasting Notes:  This wine has a pale straw colour with lime green hues. Aromas of green melon, ripe gooseberry and hints of passion fruit are highlighted by subtle notes of grassy nettles and dusty minerality. Crisp and dry at first with hints of green apple, it moves into a pronounced flavour of lemon and lime on the palate. Its long, lingering finish are reminiscent of green fig, gooseberry and citrus.

Enjoy With:  Salty goat cheese, asparagus and salads, or on its own as a sipping wine.

Style:  Medium-bodied, aromatic and flavourful white wine.

Terroir/Region:  The De Grendel vineyards are on slopes 200 metres above sea level and 7 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean in the hills of Durbanville in South Africa. The sea views, cool ocean breezes and misty nights make these vineyards unique. The climate and terroir of the region is well suited to producing some of the country’s best Sauvignon Blanc.

Producer:  Sir David Graaff first planted vines on De Grendel, a family farm dating back to 1890, in 1999. Since then, De Grendel has become synonymous with exquisite wines in South Africa. A strong emphasis is put into the scientific approach to winemaking with sustainability in mind. De Grendel preaches its philosophy of sustainable agricultural practices to support the long-term vision of the Graaff family. Carbon negative and water-wise, De Grendel can be trusted to be a sustainable winery for years to come.
