SWDTP funded and led by the Centre for Qualitative Research, Bath Workshop leads: Katharina Chudzikowski and Stefanie Gustafsson In this session, Katharina and Stefanie will talk about their experiences of using narrative approaches in the field of Organisation Studies and Management research. Secondary Analysis of Cross-National, Comparative Survey Data Webinar/Q&A, Wednesday 7 July, 2pm Speaker: Susan Banducci, University of Exeter Those completing PhD research recently may have had to develop new strategies for conducting comparative research. In this workshop we will cover one such strategy -- secondary analysis of cross-national, comparative survey data. In addition to this, Banducci will introduce some examples of published research and discuss strategies on how to add value to and gain new insight from these rich data sources. Organised by the SWDTP but open to all students (studying at any level), academics and any other colleagues who may find the content useful. What are the best early interventions for depression? Introducing longitudinal biomedical studies from a social science perspective: Southampton Women’s Survey and the Hertfordshire Cohort Study, Tuesday 13 July 2021, 12-1 This hour-long session will focus on the Southampton Women’s Survey which is the only study in Europe to recruit mothers before conception of their child, and the Hertfordshire Cohort Study which comprises a nationally unique study of 3,000 men and women born during the period 1931-1939 and still resident in the English county of Hertfordshire during the 1990s. Student ShowcaseNaomi Clarke from University of Bristol recently featured on the 'Sew What?' podcast talking about her research and placement which you can listen to below Michelle James from University of Bath had her work published in Social Sciences Journal investigating whether community-based social protection interventions can improve the wellbeing of asylum seekers in the UK Louise Toller from University of Exeter had her first paper published in Disability Studies Quarterly, focusing on identifying the strategies of chronically ill students at university Three Minute Thesis competitionThe winner of the University of Bath’s 3MT® final this year was ESRC funded Mike Richardson, Department of Psychology, SWDTP with his presentation 'Seeing with the tongue’. Mike earns a commemorative plate and a place in the 3MT® UK semi-final which will be held in July. Mike said: "The experience was awesome, such a nice way to take a step back and think about what makes our research appealing to the public, which is why most of our research takes place anyway! I particularly liked getting feedback from a variety of people during the process, which helped to tailor the presentation to suit a wider audience." Huge congratulations to Mike and our very best wishes for the UK semi-final in July! Doctoral Recognition AwardTwo ESRC funded students were amongst the winners of the Doctoral Recognition Student Award 2020/21 at Bath. This award recognises students who have contributed to enhancing the doctoral student experience. If this has impacted you: Goldsmiths' Methods Lab, has a live, growing list of resources to help rethink sociological methods within this context. The Cohort Building Fund is designed to support students in setting-up networking and research events. ESRC-funded students can apply for anywhere between £50 and £1,000 to support research events, cohort development and mixed social activities. Research Spotlight Blog: At the SWDTP we want to showcase your research. We have been looking for new ways to do this. We have, therefore, started a blog series on our website called "Research Spotlight" where SWDTP students can write around 800 words on a part of their research which they wish to spotlight. Covid-19 UpdateThe South West Doctoral Training Partnership is very aware of the impact Covid-19, home-working, cancelled fieldwork and often caring responsibilities are having upon your studies, and on your well-being 24th March 2021: The UKRI has updated its rules around eligibility for funded PhD extensions. Their announcement can be viewed here. It permits, in exceptional circumstances, further requests from students who had an earlier request turned down or who have already received an extension under phase one or phase two. 22nd February 2021: The UKRI has issued an open letter detailing its updated extensions policy. This can be read here. 26th February 2021: The SWDTP held a town hall session to listen to students’ concerns and, wherever possible, provide answers about the SWDTP, Covid-19 extensions, and other wider ranging concerns. From this we have produced a ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ Document which you can click here to read.
