Join Us in July at the DMTF Alliance Partner Technical Symposium

The seventh annual Alliance Partner Technical Symposium (APTS), being held July 22-26, 2013, in Portland, OR, is fast approaching – make your plans now to join us at this unique event where top standards bodies meet and work together collaboratively for the good of the industry at large.

Hosted by the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) and jointly sponsored by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), APTS is an extension of the DMTF’s Alliance Partner Program and brings together the technical contacts that develop industry standards in a series of hands-on working sessions. Organizations expected at APTS will include China Electronics Standardization Institute, Open Grid Forum, The Open Group, Storage Networking Industry Association, TeleManagement Forum, The Green Grid and Trusted Computing Group.

In the evenings, after a productive APTS schedule during the day, participants can enjoy Management Developers Conference (MDC) presentations at no cost. MDC sessions will allow attendees to learn directly from top industry experts who have real-world development experience working in-depth with the best management technologies available today.

“This event is unlike any other - focused on implementing and evolving standards, we look forward to it each year as an opportunity to collaborate and accelerate progress on standards across organizations,” said Mark Carlson, vice president of alliances, DMTF. “Attendance at APTS and MDC gives developers the inside track on developing and deploying standards-based enterprise management solutions.”

Conformance Testing
The CDM Forum will have on-site assistance in testing for CDM Conformance. The SM Forum is going to have representatives available to help with DASH Conformance Testing. Both testing opportunities are scheduled for Monday, July 22, from 2:45 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. Pacific time -- please bring your CDM- or DASH-enabled product. If you are planning to take advantage of this testing opportunity, please RSVP by July 1, 2013, to the applicable Forum Program Manager (cdm_pm@dmtf.org or smf_pm@dmtf.org).

APTS registration is free for DMTF and its Alliance Partner members, and anyone can attend the co-located MDC at no cost – so register now and get your hotel room at the Portland Marriott City Center Hotel, and we’ll see you there!

DMTF to Address Need for Open Software Defined Data Center Standards

On May 28, 2013, the DMTF announced it has formed a group to address the need for Software Defined Data Center management standards. The DMTF’s Open Software Defined Data Center (OSDDC) Incubator will work to develop standard architectures and definitions to describe the emerging technology that is expected to revolutionize IT infrastructure in the coming years.

While various management standards exist for physical, virtual and cloud-based systems, the industry is currently lacking standard architectures and definitions to describe the abstract, pooled resources of the Software Defined Data Center. Led by Broadcom, Cisco Systems, EMC, Fujitsu, Huawei, NetApp, Oracle and VMware, Inc., DMTF’s OSDDC Incubator will develop a set of whitepapers to outline a clear definition and scope of the SDDC concept, including Use Cases, Taxonomy and Terminology, High-level Architecture and Standards Gap Analysis.

“As Software Defined Data Center technology emerges, it’s important that we work together to develop a common understanding of this new architectural model and look for ways to provide customer interoperability through best practices and standards,” said Winston Bumpus, DMTF Chairman of the Board. “DMTF’s OSDDC Incubator will lay important groundwork, based on real-world customer use cases and requirements, that will form the foundation of critical standards activities in this area.”

For more information on the OSDDC Incubator, see the full announcement.

DMTF Educates the Industry at Partner Events

The DMTF continues its commitment to industry outreach and education through its negotiated bartered sponsorships of a number of key technology conferences. So far this year, the DMTF has had a full tradeshow booth presence and executives on-site at both the 2013 Microsoft Management Summit (MMS), held April 8-12, in Las Vegas, and Citrix Synergy 2013, held May 22-24, in Los Angeles. The DMTF has also had a cross-promotional bartered sponsorship with the Open Data Center Alliance's Forecast 2013 conference, June 17-18, in San Francisco.

These events give special discounts to DMTF members and offer an opportunity for the DMTF to provide 1:1 education and membership promotion, raising the organization’s profile among attendees and beyond. Our 2013 outreach activities are just getting started, with many more events to come in 2013 – we hope to see you during our travels!
