Through its cooperation with the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (ISTO), the IEEE is able to offer alternatives to industry, especially to those in the information and communications technology fields. “Meeting Industry's Standardization Needs” originally appeared in the June 2019 issue of Computer Magazine. On April 25, 2019, past ISTO chairman and director Gerald T. Lane (Gerry), was honored at a luncheon by the ISTO support staff. Marco W. Migliaro, ISTO president and CEO, presented Gerry a plaque to commemorate his many contributions to the organization. Having served on the Board of Directors since 2000, Gerry was an integral part of the ISTO’s formative years serving as Chairman from 2003 to 2010. At a Senate Commerce subcommittee hearing on June 25 examining the adoption of technology in transportation, Brent Hutto, Chief Relationship Officer at digital load board Truckstop.com testified that connecting transportation freight systems together would be the best way to reduce highway congestion and improve delivery times... Patrick Duffy, President of the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA) testified that such credentialing technology can be an effective use of blockchain technology. “Ensuring that the accuracy around driver credentials, whether that’s health records, insurance, or driving records – that’s high-fidelity data that hasn’t been corrupted through time...By leveraging blockchain technology we can increase that trust and allow for collaborative commerce to emerge,” he said. Duffy noted in his testimony that BiTA, whose members represent more than $1 trillion in revenue annually, released its first blockchain industry standard in February and has three more in the pipeline expected to be unveiled later this summer. Presenters from DiiA, Scott Wade and Ronald Tol, described the DALI-2 certification program, its impact on interoperability, and its expansion to cover all product types including input devices (e.g. sensors). Also included in the seminar was Intra-luminaire DALI builds on the specifications recently published by DiiA and Mike O’Boyle of Signify discussed the related ANSI work (ANSI C137.4 Working Group) Lastly, Kevin Fitzmaurice talked about Georgia Power’s very large street-lighting project (see Case Study article), and how DALI is the lighting protocol of choice for outdoor lighting. Joint Zhaga-D4i certification will be available for products including outdoor luminaires, sensors and communication nodes, starting in summer 2019.
