Click here Revolutionising the offshore sector of commercial marine In this podcast episode, we chat with James Bradford, Chief Technology Officer, North Star about their new collaboration with technology firm Stillstrom and how their offshore charging buoy concept will revolutionise this sector of commercial marine. The two firms have agreed to work out how to integrate North Star’s vessels with Stillstrom’s charging buoys, and in the future how to roll out and scale up across the industry. For it to be a realistic solution Bradford admits the cost of batteries has to come down, as they are
currently running at around $1 million per megawatt hour – in other words, up to $30 million PER VESSEL.
Bradford says offshore charging systems need to be included in the infrastructure as wind farms are being built. “The vessels, ship operators and wind farm developer all reap the benefits because the vessel will not be taking frequent trips to base and spending a long time out of service,” he says.
