Delicious and Nutritious Peaches and Nectarines

Nothing tastes more like summer than a juicy, sun-kissed peach or nectarine. These stone fruits, which have an inner hard-shell-protected seed, are available in several varieties with either yellow or white flesh. Their skin comes in tones of blush orange and red making both peaches and nectarines rich in disease-fighting compounds such as flavanoids and carotenes. A medium-sized peach or nectarine supplies a mere 60 to 70 calories with a wealth of potassium, a mineral that plays a vital role in maintaining healthy blood pressure. Each piece of fruit also supplies more than 10 percent of the daily value for fiber, much of it the water-soluble type, which helps lower circulating cholesterol levels.
