Observatory on Health and Aging for the Americas![]() Data on aging and health is crucial to better understand older adults’ health status as well as their social and economic contributions and social capital. This is why strengthening data, research and innovation to accelerate implementation is one of the enablers of the Decade of Healthy Aging. Data available on this observatory can provide a snapshot of the current available information that can be useful for prioritization and evaluation of public health interventions. Highlighted publicationsTackling abuse of older people: five priorities for the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030)This document outlines five priorities to prevent and respond to abuse of older people: combat ageism; generate more and better data on prevalence and on risk and protective factors; develop and scale up cost–effective solutions; make an investment case for addressing the issue; and raise funds to tackle the issue. Aging in Latin America and the Caribbean: social protection and quality of life of older personsThis report analyzes the quality of life of older people in Latin America and the Caribbean, how it relates to social protection policies, and how these policies must adapt to population aging. Pensions, healthcare, and long-term care policies are deeply interconnected, both directly (the three benefits overlap as determinants of a person’s budget limitations) and indirectly (through their positive effect on health and autonomy, and the consequent ability to extend people’s work - ing years). Use of the Internet and Information and Communication Technologies in older personsThis new report from the Observatory of Aging for a Chile with a future, a project that arises from the alliance between the Catholic University and Confuturo Insurance Company, highlights how the pandemic has affected the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs), increasing their use among older people, even though they lag behind in digital skills compared to younger age groups. The Observatory of Aging for Chile with a future was established with the objective of making visible relevant information about older adults in the country, through the development of studies that allow raising public awareness and revealing topics of social impact related to old age and the aging of Chileans. Diabfrail LatAm![]() The COVID-19 global pandemic has also had its effects on the Diabfrail Latam project. When recruitment of participants was about to start in the first quarter of 2020, the pandemic broke out. This meant that recruitment could not start within the timeframe originally planned in the project work plan, but it has started and soon we will have results on this new multimodal strategy for frail older adults with Diabetes in LAC countries. The program is based in other strategies already tested in European context (MIDFRAIL, VIVIFRAIL and FRAILOMICS).
