Mark Callaghan's Welcome

Dear WorldSkills Australia Supporter,

In the midst of footy finals, the National Rugby League (NRL) recently hosted a Welcome Home Function for the 2013 Team Australia Skillaroos at Rugby League Central in Sydney.

It was a great opportunity to catch up with competitors and experts from Team Australia as well as to further develop our relationship with the NRL. As with many professional sportsmen and women, rugby league players careers are limited – and again , like many sports, rugby league players often commence their footballing careers at an early age. That is why programs such as the NRL’s Welfare and Education program and the Trading Up program (the NRL’s apprenticeship mentoring program) are important initiatives.

Perth to host 2014 WSA National Competition

WorldSkills Australia is excited to announce that the 2014 WorldSkills Australia National Competition will be returning to Perth for the first time since 1989.

The competition will be held at Perth’s Convention and Exhibition Centre between the 18th and 20th of September.

The three day event will see over 500 of Australia’s most talented students, trainees and apprentices from 30 regions battle it out for gold medal success and the prestigious title of ‘Australia’s Best’ in their chosen skill or trade.

National Rugby League welcomes home Skillaroos

WorldSkills Australia (WSA) together with the National Rugby League (NRL) welcomed home the 2013 Team Australia Skillaroos on Friday September 20th, to celebrate their incredible success at the recent 42nd WorldSkills International Competition held in Leipzig, Germany.

Andrew Ryan, Australian Apprenticeship Ambassador and former Australian Rugby League legend hosted the event held at Rugby League Central in Moore Park Sydney.

The Team Australia Skillaroos, made up of 31 of the country’s most talented skill and trade professionals, have returned home from competing against 1,000 of the world’s skill and trade champions from over 60 countries.

WSA at Floriade

Floriade, also known as Australia’s biggest celebration of spring, is an annual festival that showcases one million flowers in bloom throughout Canberra’s Commonwealth Park.

This year, WorldSkills Australia was invited to be a part of Floriade’s ‘Inspiration Hub’ from the 30th of September to the 7th of October.

The WorldSkills Australia display included an interactive Try’aSkill demonstration featuring Lincoln Electric's innovative 3D simulated welding machine.

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests and the graduating students of year 12,

My name is Jessica Martin and 3 months ago I represented Australia at the 42nd WorldSkills International Competition held in Leipzig, Germany. I competed in the Restaurant Service category and placed 2nd in the world.

How does one get to experience that? Well I am here tonight to talk to you about my journey, achievements, opportunities and success since finishing school.

AuSkills Melbourne - Skills for Success

Registrations now open!

AuSkills is coming to Melbourne on October 23. The event will be held at the Palladium at Crown from 7am.

Hear from apprentices, trainers and employers who are each involved in the apprenticeship space. The event will also explore the current challenges in attracting and retaining apprentices.

David Baber, the Director of the Pathways Branch, will be the keynote speaker at the event. Attendees will also hear from Lukas Page (2011 BBM Scholarship Recipient and 2010 WSA National Competition Gold Medallist in Joinery) and Chris Howlett (Lecturer, Landscape Management at Northern Melbourne Insitute of TAFE) as part of a panel discusiion.

National Carpenters Day

Coming up is the fifth annual National Carpenters Day. The event will be held on Friday 25th of October and will celebrate the accomplishments of Australia’s carpenters.

Last year over 10,000 people attended over 200 BBQs nationally and this year will be bigger and better, since introducing a new initiative, ‘National Carpenters Week’, which will be held between the 21st and 27th of October.

Not only can BBQ hosts hold a BBQ at any time during this week, but there will also be other events held including education seminars, master classes and workshops.

This year National Carpenters Day will again incorporate the National Carpeter of the Year and Apprentice Carpenter of the Year Awards. If you know someone who deserves to win this title, head to www.carpentersday.com.au to nominate them.

Signage competitors compete at Trade Show

The Visual Impact Trade Show is a bi-annual exhibition which showcases the latest and greatest in the Visual Graphics Industries. This year the exhibition was held from the 12th to the 14th of September at the Sydney Showgrounds.

In a first of its kind, Visual Industries Suppliers Association (VISA), a sponsor of WSA’s Signage category, provided 10 of the 2013 WSA Regional Signage Competition winners an all-expense paid trip to Homebush, Sydney. The competitors got the opportunity to participate in the Skills Development Competition, held as part of the Visual Impact Trade Show.

Matthew Thorpe wins Baking Competition

Matthew Thorpe, 22 year old baker from Adelaide, competed in the Laucke Flour Mill Professional Baking Competition held at the Royal Adelaide Show on the 10th of September.

Matthew walked away from the competition with a blue ribbon in the Artisan Bread Category, “I enjoy being able to work with my hands, there’s a degree of science and a degree of art and creativity involved in baking as well,” said Matthew.

Matthew also competed at the 2010 WSA National Competition held in Sydney, where he won a gold medal in the baking category. In 2011 Matthew, was chosen to participate in the BBM Skilled Futures Program which provided him with the opportunity to travel around Europe for two months where he completed training and work experience at a number of internationally known bakeries, patisseries and ingredient companies.

Since his journey with WSA, Matthew has established his own baking school, ‘Bakers Treat’ where he aims to educate, equip and inspire people to bake at home.

Regional Competitions return to the Pilbara Region

On the 24th and 25th of September WorldSkills Australia General Manager Conny Wilson, made the journey to Western Australia’s North West region to attend the Port Hedland Business Services Regional Competition and the Karratha Fitting Regional Competition.

WorldSkills Australia is excited to see the Pilbara Institute running regional competitions again for the first time in over a decade. As part of the Karratha Regional Competition, seven mechanical fitting apprentices were required to complete a series of projects that showcased their current skills and knowledge, with the hope of progressing to the national level.

Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations Russell Routledge!

WorldSkills Australia would like to place the ‘Volunteer of the Month’ spotlight on Russell Routledge, our 2011 Team Australia Skillaroo in Sheetmetal technology and ongoing dedicated WSA volunteer.

Russell has recently returned from Canberra, where he spent the last week assisting WorldSkills Australia in the ‘Inspiration Hub’ at the Floriade festival. Russell dedicated an entire week to help out in running a Try’aSkill demonstration which featured the innovative Lincoln Electric 3D virtual welding simulator. Over six days Russell shared his expert metal work skills with hundreds of people who were interested in giving welding a go.
