LUNGevity Celebrates Our Research Awardees!Zeynep Gümüş, PhD, who was awarded LUNGevity’s 2014 Early Detection research award, recently published two papers on her work in lung cancer. The first, "Oncogenic G12D mutation alters local conformations and dynamics of K-RAS," discusses research to better understand the structure of an altered form of the KRAS protein, the KRAS G12D subtype, the results of which will hopefully create better drugs to target this specific type of mutation. Dr. Gümüş's second paper, "Ancestral reconstruction reveals mechanisms of ERK regulatory evolution," discusses her research team’s work to understand how proteins called kinases have evolved with time and how this evolution impacts the development of diseases, such as cancer. Their research reveals that the activity of kinase proteins is tightly controlled to ensure that cells behave normally and furthers our understanding of how cancer cells mutate kinase genes to escape effects of targeted therapies. LUNGevity is proud of our many research awardees and we love to see their continued success even after our funding has ended. We wish Dr. Gümüş future success in advancing the field of lung cancer research! LUNGevity also recently announced the recipients of its 2019 Career Development Awards (CDA) for lung cancer research. Learn more about these researchers’ projects and their impact in our press release and more about the CDA program on our website. You can also support LUNGevity research. Meet Your Medical Team: PulmonologistsThe newest installation in our blog series, Meet Your Medical Team, features pulmonologist Brett Bade, MD. The Meet Your Medical Team series gives lung cancer patients insight into the role and importance of each medical specialist they may encounter throughout diagnosis and treatment. It is our hope that these interviews will help patients better communicate with their healthcare providers and become stronger advocates for their own care. Do you want to hear from a specific type of healthcare provider? Submit your answer and questions for the medical specialist here.
