Wine of the Weekend

Bollato di Guarini Negroamaro Primitivo 2020

Beyond the popularity of grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, there are endless unique discoveries to be made in the wine world. One of ours is Bollato di Guarini – a blend of Negroamaro and Primitivo, two grapes slightly off the beaten track. The bottle, styled by the winery, makes this wine truly one of a kind.

Tasting Notes: Bollato di Guarini unites the two signature grapes of the region, Negroamaro and Primitivo, delivering flavours of ripe black berries and plum, bramble and balsamic. The oak shows vanilla and spice that match the wine’s tobacco and leather notes nicely, along with smooth tannins and a lengthy finish.

Enjoy With: Tomato bruschetta and fresh tomato sauces, meaty pizza, lamb burgers, wild boar and other game, or aged hard cheeses.

Style: A full-bodied, smooth red wine.

Terroir/Region: The Puglian peninsula (the ‘heel’ of the Italian ‘boot’) is all sunshine and vineyards. There is no escape from the Mediterranean sun here, so grapes must be able to fend for themselves. Negroamaro and Primitivo are at home in the region and both grapes love the sun like it’s the first day of patio season.

Producer: The Losito family’s business was tavernas when it began in 1910. The Guarini family’s business was wine trading, and when the two families were joined by marriage, Losito e Guarini was formed. Installing some of the first bottling plants and modern equipment in the region set the family’s eyes on using modern tactics and traditional grapes to create wines now enjoyed all over the world.
