February 2014

It's the month for love and we have a few heartfelt stories to share along with the heartpumping premiere of our mini-doc, Heavy Metal Salmon.

From the Heart

There are so many reasons to love the Skeena and we know you have your own love story.  Maybe you met your Grizzly bear sow when she admired your Stanfields on the river bank early one spring morning.  That's when you knew you had to win her over with a dozen wildflowers and a country tune playing on your truck radio.

In honour of this special month, we want to hear how you fell head over heels with the wild people, places and things of the Skeena Watershed and how you are getting to happily ever after.

Share your words, stories and photos via our Facebook or @SkeenaWild.  You could be featured on our Web site

Presenting "Heavy Metal Salmon"

We are proud to present our new mini-doc, Heavy Metal Salmon.  This dynamic animated video short is based on the heart-wrenching findings of a recent review we conducted on Sub-lethal Metal Toxicity Effects on Salmonids.  Huge shout outs to our in-house talent, Rod Brown and Mike Price for their diligence, creativity and hard work.  We would also like to thank our sponsor Mountain Equipment Co-op for providing support to make our video production possible.

Caring Kids

What do birthday parties and salmon conservation have in common?  Love and hope. The love of a wild Skeena and hope for the future.

You may be surprised what Farrah DeFreitas wanted for her 7th birthday this year.  Healthy salmon and clean water for the Skeena watershed!  An inspiring, compassionate and selfless youngster, Farrah decided to support SkeenaWild by donating $115 she collected from her party-goers to help with water conservation issues.  She also came up with the idea of developing a competition for Earth day where school kids compete in a creek clean-up.  Of course the prizes would involve candy and the satisfaction of an important job well done.

The same can be said of little Maelle Lennert.  This year for her 3rd birthday party she also donated to SkeenaWild.  When Auntie Julia asked what she wanted the money to go towards, she sweetly replied, "to save the fishies".

Now that's kids working together to help their community protect precious resources and our natural playground.
