US CRAFT EXPERT JANE MILOSCH VISITS MELBOURNE
Former Renwick Curator and Director of Provenance Research team from the Smithsonian Institute. American Craft expert and curator from the Smithsonian Institute is visiting Australia in July to share her insights on the international craft market and American craft now. Craft Victoria, in partnership with the Gordon Darling Foundation, is thrilled to be hosting such a brilliant figure in contemporary American craft. Milosch comes from the Smithsonian Institute, Washington
DC, where she heads up the Provenance Research Initiative, and prior to that, was a curator at the Renwick museum that specialises in American Craft. She has also worked at the Office of the Under Secretary for History, Art and Culture. CEO and Artistic Director Jane Scott said it was wonderful for Australian makers to be exposed to Jane Milosch's wealth of knowledge about the international craft world, and contemporary trends in America. "We expect these events to be of great benefit for anyone interested in breaking into the international market and overseas institutions," Ms Scott
said. "We are offering two opportunities to connect with Milosch: an intimate dinner at Young and Jackson on July 11, and a public seminar at Craft on Flinders Lane on July 13. "These events and Milosch in person will provide a fascinating insight into the state of craft practice, provenance, and American Craft today.
In a recent Q&A with Craft Victoria
Jane Milosch spoke about the significance of the handmade: "We are living at a time when so many things in life are cheap, mass-produced, and fragmented. Craft brings things back together: it enriches our lives, gives us purpose and meaning, and encourages “hands-on” living that values life and unique, handmade products and community life - one that is not isolated but participatory and transformative. "Craft connects us to life through our senses and soul; and well- designed, handmade, beautiful objects are pleasing to look at, hold, touch, use, live with, and share. To be a skilled
craftsperson takes time and commitment, humility and perseverance - coming to know materials by working with them over years, learning certain skills, and then pushing those skills to the max in order to learn and create something new. "I think we are experiencing a resurgence in craft because many people are looking for meaning beyond their bank accounts - searching for, and not just swallowing, answers: they are looking for a purpose in life," Ms Milosch said.
