Global guidance for corporate water disclosure

Corporate Water Disclosure Guidelines, providing the first ever common approach to corporate water disclosure, were last month released as part of the UN Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate initiative.

Companies are fundamentally changing the way they address water. Increasingly, they are investing in water-efficient technologies, working with suppliers to encourage more responsible water use, introducing cleaner and more efficient products, and seeking to advance sustainable water management to mitigate water-related risks and impacts.

Corporate water disclosure is a critical component of a company’s water management efforts and water sustainability more generally. The new guidelines, developed in conjunction with expert organizations including CDP, will help to advance a common approach to corporate water disclosure that addresses the complexity of water resources in a comprehensive yet concise and practical manner.

CDP’s work with supply chains continues to grow as companies increasingly understand the need for a climate resilient supply chain

After a 47% increase in the number of companies who were invited to respond to the CDP Supply Chain 2012 information request, over 2300 supplier responses have been submitted. FirstCarbon Solutions, the 2012 Supply Chain Scoring Partner, has begun to score responses and companies can request tailored feedback to each company, while Accenture, the 2012 Supply Chain Report Writer, has already started work on the analysis of these responses in anticipation of the CDP Supply Chain Global Report launch in January 2013.

Looking ahead to the 2013 disclosure cycle, CDP is now recruiting new supply chain members. aiming to better understand their supply chain risk. 2013 will be the first year that water will be included in this program, enabling companies to monitor water-related risks in their supply chain through the familiar CDP framework.

Support for UK companies with carbon reporting

From April 2013 it will be mandatory for businesses listed on the London Stock Exchange to report their carbon emissions. To provide companies that use the CDP system with extra resources to help with this, CDP has partnered with three new consultancies, Carbon Clear, Carbon Credentials and IMS Consulting. These consultancies, along with our existing consultancy partners, are expertly placed to assist companies with this fresh carbon reporting challenge.

In London on November 6th CDP’s CEO Paul Simpson will speak at Environmental Finance’s Mandatory Reporting conference. Companies should attend to find out more on what you have to report, how to do it and the potential costs and benefits. Investors will gain value from understanding the new opportunities and risks facing companies and the likely winners and losers from mounting pressures to reduce carbon emissions. Speakers include representatives Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, British Airways, CCLA and World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Attendees quoting MCR/CDP/20 when booking will receive a 20% discount.
