Wine of the Weekend

Jean de Trimoulet Saint Émilion Grand Cru 2014

There are usually a few people we see over the holidays whom we want to impress. Whether it’s your significant other, your in-laws or potential in-laws, the boss, or the host of the party, being able to ‘wow’ someone carries a little extra weight over the holidays. This week’s wine is perfect for just that. Jean de Trimoulet Grand Cru Saint Émilion 2014 makes a perfect gift or a perfect bottle to open with dinner to add that ‘wow’ factor.

Tasting Notes: Dense and intense, Jean de Trimoulet Grand Cru 2014 is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc sporting plenty of ripe black fruit along with aromas and flavours of leather, mocha, cigar box and oak spice. The tannins show their age with their silky-smooth texture spread out over the long and lingering finish.

Enjoy With: Savoury dishes like roast beef or grilled red meats, duck, white meats with gravy, stews, blue cheese, brie or camembert.

Style: A dry, full-flavoured, full-bodied red wine.

Terroir/Region: Saint Émilion lies on the right (north) bank of the Gironde River in Bordeaux, France. This is hallowed ground for Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes. With a different system than the left bank of Bordeaux, Grand Cru wines are a bit easier to find in Saint Émilion as it denotes a quality tier with legal guidelines, not a rating system. A Grand Cru at this price, however, is as much a unicorn as the Grand Crus across the river!

Producer: As the second wine of Château Trimoulet, Jean de Trimoulet is named after the Jean family who founded the estate in 1802. In 2016, the Dassault family purchased the property, maintaining its rich history while bringing in the famed winemaker Michel Rolland to help bring the wines to their full potential, ever looking forward while respecting the past.
