Harvest Report: Napa and Sonoma

Harvest

I was just in the Napa and Sonoma wine country, and it looks once again like it’s going to be a high yield, and high quality, year for the grape harvest. The relatively cool growing season has allowed the fruit to mature slowly and develop flavor, and most of the growers I talked to were very happy with the quality. The USDA crop report for 2009 forecasted that 3.3 million tons of wine grapes are on the vine. Though that is well under the record 3.76 million tons harvested in 2005, it is well over last year’s 3.06 million-ton figure. This should bode well for consumers, because large crops usually translate to lower prices.

Wine-Country Foods at Their Best

Grape harvest is a favorite time for foodies who relish in the bounty of delicious wine country offerings. But whether you head over to the Napa Valley for a gourmet picnic or make your own wine-country meal, relish in the fact that many of this region’s eats are loaded with health-boosting properties besides luscious flavor.

  • Olive oil: Known world-wide now as a notable olive growing region, these local olive oils contain heart-healthy monounsaturated fat shown to reduce circulating cholesterol levels as well as cut heart disease risk. Many extra virgin olive oils also contain powerful antioxidants called phenols that also protect your heart by promoting better blood flow.
  • Local cheeses: Regional cheeses made from cow’s and goat’s milk provide a seductively delicious source of live bacteria from the cultures used in cheese making. These cultures help promote healthy bacteria growth in your intestine, which in turn may boost immune health.
  • Seasonal produce: From freshly picked squashes to vine-ripened grapes, this region’s local produce has a wealth of good-for-you nutrients such as fiber, vitamin C, and potassium for healthy blood pressure. Also, the bounty of colorful produce showcases the variety of phytonutrients such as lycopene and quercitin that may help lower risk for a variety of age-related ailments.
  • Wine: In moderation wine, whether white or red varietals, has been shown to lower risk for heart disease. Red wine (as well as red and purple grapes) also contain phenols that research suggests may protect blood vessels and regions in the brain against aging.
