This week’s wine, Bordon Rioja Reserva 2015, captures exactly that. The team at Bordon are gatekeepers of this classic style, and the Bordon name has now travelled just as far as the name ‘Rioja’
Tasting Notes: Bordon Rioja Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache) and Mazuelo, creating a delicious and elegant expression of cherries, plum, toffee, chocolate and cedar.
Enjoy With: Spanish jamon (ham) and semi-hard cheeses like Manchego, grilled red meats like lamb cutlets or chorizo sausages, grilled red pepper, South-West style barbeque and paella.
Style: A dry, smooth, medium-bodied red wine.
Terroir/Region: Spain takes aging its wines very seriously – it’s the law, after all. This week’s wine is a ‘Reserva’, meaning it must (by law) be aged for at least 3 years before it can be sold, with at least one of those years spent in oak barrels. This aging helps soften the tannins while integrating the blend and mellowing the wine. These requirements make Reserva wines ready to be enjoyed as soon as you pick them up!
Producer: When winemaker Ruben Provedo creates the Bordon Reserva, he draws from his knowledge of classic Rioja styles. Using grapes from the 3 subregions of Rioja, he carefully blends the characteristics of each region into a balanced and harmonic expression. This style is what made Rioja a globally recognized wine and made Bordon a globally recognized winery.
