Welcome our new ED: Dawn Hanson!

After some time without an ED, we are so pleased to welcome Dawn.

Dawn grew up in Telkwa and moved to Vancouver to pursue post-secondary education. After 14 years in the city, she decided to return to Smithers for a year with her husband, to see how it went. Twelve years later they have built a house, are raising a daughter, and are happily situated on the banks of the Bulkley River in Telkwa. Dawn has a Bachelor of General Studies from Simon Fraser University, with Minors in Biology and Humanities. She studied Social Enterprise for Sustainable Community Development through SFU’s Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue Program, which morphed ideas of environmentalism and debate into sustainability and dialogue. Her work in the Bulkley Valley has included community development with a focus on health, community engagement envisioning the Skeena watershed and its residents in the year 2050, strategic planning for social and environmentally focused community organizations, and a diversity of project and event coordination.

In the summer, Dawn loves gardening and rock hunting on the river. In the winter she can be found playing women’s hockey and coordinating the Jackrabbits cross country ski program.

Bat box building: a workshop success!

Our bat box workshop a few weeks back was a great success - building homes for bats was very rewarding!

We would like to thank shop teacher Gavin Scorrer from Smithers Secondary School for all his hard work and for hosting us in the workshop space, the Bulkley Valley Credit Union for their generous $500 donation, as well as the facilitator and bat expert from Skeena Community Bat Project, Ashleigh Ballevona for teaching us all about these magnificent creatures.

The Interior News also popped by and covered the event. Read the article here

What are your workshop ideas?

We would like to open the floor to you - our members - for any ideas you may have for workshops that could be hosted through the BVRC! We would like to hear from our community on what most interests them and what kind of educative and hands on workshops we can help facilitate.
