Dr. Liz on Fair TradeDr Liz

In this emerging world of “green” shopping, where does the term “Fair Trade” fit in? You likely have seen it appear on packages of coffees, teas, chocolates and other specialty foods. Here are a few Fair Trade basics to help you make informed choices on these products:

Fair Trade describes a system of equitable treatment of farm workers and producers worldwide, with the goal of ensuring a fair price for their products, such as coffee or chocolate. For example, coffee brokers and other middlemen in the coffee business gain large profits by marginalizing growers and paying minimally for their coffee. Fair Trade coffee ensures growers get a fair price for their goods, which covers growing and harvest expenses, and also connects growers with cooperatives for selling their goods on the global market. This in turn helps eliminate the middleman and retains profits for the growers.

Who benefits from Fair Trade?

  • The farmers and producers earn a fair living, making it possible for them to support their families and not live in poverty.
  • The communities of the farmers and producers flourish as resources become available to support local schools and services.
  • The environment benefits, because Fair Trade systems promote the use of sustainable agriculture methods that protect resources. Farmers and workers also experience improved work conditions.
  • Many Fair Trade items are organic because the farmers are given an opportunity to use growing practices that limit the use of pesticides. Organic produce may provide, in some cases, a more nutritious option for consumers.

Several organizations oversee Fair Trade terms and conditions, such as FLO (Fair Trade Labeling Organizations International). You can learn more on their Web site: fairtrade.net. Look for the blue and yellow seal that shows you’re selecting a Fair Trade product.
