TOP STORY: Dr Mark Duncan-Smith delivers the AMA (WA) Action Agenda 2021
The delivery of public hospital health services in Western Australia is in an unprecedented crisis by any measure.

This is not due to “unprecedented demand” or the pandemic. Hospital activity over recent years has increased in line with expectations and COVID-19 lockdowns have, in fact, resulted in fewer emergency department presentations.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Hands off Immunisation, Mr Prime Minister
Medicus: August 2014

Reflecting on this article from 2014, we can be thankful that the Federal Government’s flawed GP co-payment proposal was sensibly quashed. This followed many months of intense lobbying and public advocacy by the AMA - including direct negotiations with then Health Minister Sussan Ley. The article makes for a particularly interesting read given the current COVID-19 vaccination roll-out and national childhood immunisation rates.

While the national immunisation coverage rate for all five-year-old children is just above 95 per cent, WA lags behind all the other states and territories at 94.30 per cent. How are we faring with the COVID vaccine roll-out? We’re dead last here again, with just 28.1 per cent of our population fully vaccinated, well behind the national average.
