SEA CAPE's year in review2020 will go down in history as one of the strangest years of all time. SEA CAPE kicked off the year on 4 January with our flagship TMIP to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. The trip was a success, with students gaining valuable insights into doing business in the region. Little did we know that the rest of the year would see a major rejig of our planned offerings. During the lockdown period we moved our MRP workshops online and developed a COVID-19 webinar for businesses. In the second half of the year, we gradually reintroduced face-to-face MRPs, ran online ASEAN events, and wrapped up our Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa programme for Māori students and businesses. We then rounded off the year with an event highlighting thought leadership in New Zealand around APEC in the run up to the country’s hosting of APEC 2021. Despite the circumstances, this year has taught us to embrace disruption that challenges our thinking about enabling connectivity and engagement between NZ businesses and individuals and the Southeast Asia region. These new ways of thinking will continue to inform our offerings in 2021. Thanks again for your continual support for our activities. Best wishes for the festive season and have a good break! - Siah Hwee Ang, Southeast Asia CAPE Director HighlightsA snapshot of our activity in 2020
Some 2020 highlights include participating in New Zealand in the Asia-Pacific in the year of APEC - the launch event for a special issue of Policy Quarterly. We were delighted to welcome distinguished guests, including the Hon. Damien O’Connor to this event held at Victoria University of Wellington. If you would like a printed copy of Policy Quarterly, please respond to this email with your mailing address. We hosted 24 Market Readiness Programme workshops across seven cities in New Zealand both online and virtually. Special guest speakers included the Indonesian Ambassador H.E. Tantowi Yahya, and the Vietnamese Ambassador H.E. Ta Van Thong. In addition to new MRP modules on Indonesia, and Singapore & Malaysia, SEA CAPE developed a COVID-19 webinar on how Southeast Asian businesses responded and adapted to the pandemic and lessons for NZ businesses. Other achievements include the Tertiary Market Immersion Programme (TMIP) which took place in January in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, the Te Hononga-ā-Kiwa programme for Māori students and businesses, Building Global Community workshops in schools, distributing copies of our popular Toitoi journal, and sharing the TMIP 2020 student projects.
