Wine of the Weekend

Yvon Mau Merlot

Merlot Day is November 7 and there is no better grape to turn to with the changing of the season. Merlot’s fruity profile and soft delivery make it an easy wine to love, either in its juicy and joyful youth, or as a brooding and complex aged wine. This week’s wine, Yvon Mau Merlot, was conceived in the home of Merlot – Bordeaux, France – but comes from the sunny, easy-going shores of the French Mediterranean. If this is your first Merlot Day, Yvon Mau will make sure it’s not your last.

Tasting Notes: The bright and fruity aroma is jam packed with notes of black cherry and raspberry, giving Yvon Mau Merlot an immediate appeal. The palate is smooth and well-balanced with red and black berry flavours at the forefront, followed by cocoa-like tannins and ripe fruit flavours lingering though the finish.

Enjoy With: Lean red meats like roast beef or pork tenderloin, meatballs, soft cheeses, or as a smooth and satisfying sip on its own.

Style: A medium-bodied, fruity red wine.

Terroir/Region: Vin de Pays de l’Aude, located in the south-west of France, is a large wine region that encompasses a number of important, smaller wine appellations. The landscape is rugged, rocky and full of vineyards. Mediterranean sunshine is tempered by cool air from the Pyrenees mountains which keep the grapes healthy and the wines soft and satisfying.

Producer: Founded as a négociant house of Bordeaux wines, the Yvon Mau company grew to also produce wines in different regions of France. Yvon Mau himself, the son of the founder, would cycle around France finding the best wines the country had to offer, and sending word back to Bordeaux that more wine was on the way!.

Availability: Yvon Mau Merlot is available in the France section of your local LCBO and for online ordering. It comes in two sizes in case you’re stocking up, and at this price, it’s a good idea.
