The Australian Sociological Association: Members' Newsletter No Images? Click here Dear , In case you missed it, "It has been revealed in Senate Estimates that 11 ARC Discovery Program applications recommended for funding were vetoed by Minister Simon Birmingham, the then Minister for Education, in late 2017 and early 2018." TASA's Executive responded with a statement that was tweeted and posted on TASA's blog & Facebook page. You can access that statement here. Annual General Meeting (AGM)If you would like something included on the AGM agenda, or would like to submit an apology, please forward the details to Sally Daly in the TASA Office by Monday November 5, 2018. Please note, paper copies of documents will not be provided at the AGM. Members will receive the 2018 Annual Report and the final AGM agenda, electronically, prior to the meeting. TASA 2018Professoriate MeetingA review of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Codes (FOR, SEO and ToA codes) is planned for 2019. This is the first review since 2007, so it is likely the one opportunity for some time to update codes to better reflect current research in Sociology, with consequences for grant assessment processes, reporting processes and the ERA assessment exercise. Submissions will likely have most impact if they come from disciplinary associations like TASA. The Professoriate meeting at TASA 2018 (Tuesday November 20, 12:30pm - 1:30pm) will discuss current codes relevant to sociology and solicit proposals from members for alternatives. Conference DocumentsThanks to huge efforts from TASA's 2018 Local Organising Committee, Thematic Group Conveners, the Digital Publications Editor, the Professional Organising Committee and others, we are very happy to be able to share the following conference documents with you CongratulationsA warm congratulations is extended to fellow member Claire Baker who was awarded her PhD last weekend, entitled ‘Experiencing Change in a Globalising Agricultural Economy: A Case Study’, School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences at the University of New England. Claire was also awarded the Chancellor’s Doctoral Research Medal in recognition of research of exceptional merit and at the forefront of its field. Looking to interview employers of Sociology graduatesAs part of developing new Applied Sociology units at the University of Sydney (an alternative 4th-year path for those taking a non-scholarly path after graduation), fellow member Leah Williams Veazey is looking to talk to employers (or potential employers) of Sociology graduates. The aim is to shape the courses so they are valuable to students in terms of employability, as well as being intellectually stimulating. Leah we would like to speak to employers from a range of sectors (private, public, NGO) about the skills, capabilities and knowledges that would be valued in a Sociology graduate. Perhaps also about any gaps in these areas that employers would hope an Applied Sociology course might help to fill. If you are interested, please get in touch with Leah, it will be a fairly brief, informal interview and can take place in person (logistics permitting), or by Skype/phone/email, whichever suits. Leah would also be happy for people to contact her with any useful resources/websites/ideas which might be helpful in shaping these courses.
