ECG Masterclass Tuesday, 18.09.2018 Ultrasound Masterclass Tuesday, 18.09.2018 Speaker in the Spotlight with Dr Bill Bestic Dr Bill Bestic, Q: What are you presenting at R@TH 2018? A: I’m giving a talk about the importance of failure. We shy away from it in medicine, but it’s importance is embraced in other high performing cultures. I do believe we are missing out on seeing failing exams, poor patient outcomes, financial or personal disasters as opportunities to learn, gain resilience and develop coping strategies that fortify our character for the next time. Q: What knowledge will attendees gain from hearing your session? A: I hope you’ll come away with less fear of failure. Maybe you’ll even consider how to better support trainees and colleagues who have ‘failed’ in some respect rather than avoid them. Failure is not a dirty word and success is a poor teacher. I will share some secrets from the Special Air Service (SAS), an elite organisation with a strongly developed ethos of ‘the more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in war’. We were approached by teams such as the All Blacks to help develop cultures shaped by humility and the results speak for themselves. Who Dares Wins doesn’t mean you’re always successful. It means you’re not afraid to try. Even in the face of adversity or seemingly impossible odds. It certainly will not be a self-help or resilience 101 session! More of a chat about how other organisations and my
own personal experience of failure can be the most powerful and important teacher you can get. Using failure effectively is the key. Q: What excites you about being part of R@TH 2018? A: I’m excited by the innovative nature of the conference, and the bravery of the organising committee to challenge dogma and inspire participants to think critically. We hope you are not afraid of heights! Join us for our Conference Dinner in the clouds at STUDIO Sydney Tower, included in your registration! You will not only get the chance to enjoy finest Australian wines and a selected menu but as well stunning views of the city at night! |
