Fire Safety changes and how they affect your care settings

Recent updates to fire safety legislation following the Grenfell enquiry have significant implications for care settings, especially where the safety of vulnerable individuals are concerned. Care providers must adapt to these changes to ensure compliance and maintain a safe environment for staff, residents, and visitors.

Key Changes to Fire Safety Regulations

  • Care homes and facilities must regularly review and update their fire risk assessments. This ensures they address any changes to the environment, such as new layouts, occupancy, or resident needs, and tailor these assessments to support individuals with mobility, sensory impairments, or cognitive conditions like dementia.
  • Evacuation procedures need to be personalised to the specific needs of residents, especially those who may need assistance during an emergency. Personal Evacuation Plans should be reviewed, and staff must be trained in both day and night-time evacuation scenarios.
  • Comprehensive fire safety training is mandatory for all staff, covering fire risks, evacuation procedures, and the correct use of fire safety equipment. Regular fire drills must also be conducted to ensure staff readiness.
  • It’s crucial to maintain and service fire safety equipment regularly. This includes smoke detectors, alarms, extinguishers, and emergency lighting. Equipment should be tailored to meet the specific needs of residents, such as providing non-obtrusive alarms for those with hearing impairments.
  • Care providers must keep accurate records of fire drills, risk assessments, and equipment maintenance to demonstrate compliance with fire safety regulations. This documentation is key to ensuring safety and avoiding potential legal or financial repercussions.

Clear understanding of what good support looks like. Rooted in practical knowledge and lived experience, not just theory.

Insight into the impact of unconscious bias. Helping staff        recognise assumptions, reflect on attitudes, and take action to reduce health inequalities.

Improved communication and confidence. Equipping staff with tools to better connect with people who communicate in different ways.

Guidance on legal duties and human rights. Reinforcing the importance of consent, choice, and person-centred care.

Voices that matter. Training is co-delivered and shaped by people with lived experience, ensuring the message truly lands.

This isn’t just about meeting mandatory training requirements,  it’s about delivering care that’s safer, fairer, and more respectful.

Since COVID, the legislation and guidance around Confirmation of Expected Death have changed, but many nurses tell us they still feel unsure about what they are allowed to do or whether their training is up to date.

That’s why we are running a series of live Zoom training sessions designed to give registered nurses the clarity and confidence they need to carry out this important role.

The course covers the legal changes, clinical checks, documentation, and how to support families with sensitivity and professionalism. It also helps support CQC compliance by ensuring your team understands their responsibilities as part of safe and well-led end of life care planning.

We have other dates available throughout the year, or if you prefer, we can deliver this course onsite just for your nurses. We can also arrange a private Zoom session for your team if that suits you better

If you would like to book a place or talk it through, just reply to this email and I will be happy to help.
