Wine of the Weekend

Gran Feudo Reserva 2016

Award season is here, and although traditional grapes play starring roles in ‘Old World’ (a.k.a. European) wines, it doesn’t mean that new characters can’t be introduced. Garnacha (Grenache) and Tempranillo grapes still play centre stage in traditional Spanish wines, however, the introduction of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from France has created two strong supporting roles. This week’s wine, Gran Feudo Reserva 2016, has Tempranillo, Merlot, and Cabernet sharing the wine-stage as near equals, founding what is now its traditional house style. We give it a standing ovation!

Tasting Notes: A blend of Merlot, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, Gran Feudo Reserva is brimming with red berry jam, plum, vanilla, smoky notes and oak spices from 18 months in barrel. The tannins smoothly cross your palate and then bring a dusty grip through the lengthy finish.

Enjoy With: Paella, beef empanadas, burgers, roast lamb or charcuterie like Spanish jamón.

Style: A medium-bodied, fruity, dry red wine.

Terroir / Region: Gran Feudo hails from the Navarra region of Spain, a very diverse region to say the least. Wines are typically blended following a similar formula to Gran Feudo Reserva, using classic Spanish grapes like Tempranillo or Garnacha and adding splashes of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. These blended red wines are a specialty of the region.

Producer: The roots of Gran Feudo take us to the “La Cascajera” winery built in 1872. Since that time, the Chivite family has constantly modernised the winery with state-of-the-art technology to produce wines which, vintage after vintage, pick up awards and recognition for their excellent value for money.

Availability: Gran Feudo Reserva is available in the Spain section of your local LCBO and is $2 off until March 28th. Cue the applause.
