Cleaning up the lake one piece of trash at a time

Glimpse what the Colorado River looked like before the Highland Lakes

Matagorda Bay Nature Park wins award for youth education

Nearly 800 volunteers pulled trash from Lake Travis and picked up litter from the lake’s shoreline on Sept. 11. The 17th Annual Lake Travis Underwater and Shoreline Cleanup netted 1.64 tons of trash and debris from 19 sites.

At Shaffer Bend Recreation Area, you can currently experience the Colorado River in its original riverbed and observe the interesting rock formations that usually go unnoticed under the water. View the slide show.

A program to teach Bay City students how to be good stewards of water resources earned LCRA’s Matagorda Bay Natural Science Center recognition with a Gulf Guardian Award in Youth Education.

Gloster Bend park hosts are wealth of information for visitors

Linda and Danny Clayton have been part of LCRA’s park host program since 2006. In 2005, they retired and traded in their ranch near Bastrop for a loaded fifth-wheel RV. They sold their possessions down to what could fit in the 38-foot-long RV and a pickup. They have enjoyed a handful of parks that they call home during the fall and winter in Texas. We caught up with Danny and Linda to hear about the park they are currently hosting and to find out what they think makes Gloster Bend a great recreation area.

The American bald eagles have returned to the Lake Buchanan area

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologist Dale Schmidt says the pair of eagles that have nested in the area for the past eight years are about to start their ninth season of nesting, right along Texas Highway 29 halfway between Buchanan Dam and Llano. They will spend the next few weeks restoring and expanding their nest, which is composed of layers of sticks and limbs that can weigh as much as a ton. Bald eagles typically nest along rivers and lakes where they can hunt for fish, turtles and waterfowl. Due to drought conditions, and less water in area rivers, the eagles may be seen more frequently hunting on Lake Buchanan. Canyon of the Eagles Nature Park is located on the shores of Lake Buchanan. It makes an ideal base for venturing out around the area, and offers accommodations from tent campsites to RV camping to resort-style cabins and a restaurant.
