Wine of the Weekend

Dachshund Pinot Grigio 2018

It’s time for us to raise a glass to the company our furry friends provide. Ontario’s dogs are probably wondering how they suddenly got it so good – owners home all the time AND extra walks?! Meanwhile, your cat may be plotting your demise for invading its space more than ever before. With both species wondering what the heck is going on, we are just lucky to have them. No matter what your pet is, take a moment to appreciate its company. Our method is to grab a bottle of Dachshund Pinot Grigio 2018 and give a toast to the pup! Then he looks up… wondering how he is supposed to fetch a wine glass.

Tasting Notes: Dachshund gives a German nod to the lighter, Italian style of Pinot Grigio, showing bright citrus, pear, and crisp apple notes, with a balanced structure and a refreshing finish.

Enjoy With: Seafood, summer salads, veggie dishes and grilled chicken. It’s also great by itself on a warm afternoon.

Style: A crisp, refreshing light-bodied white wine.

Terroir/Region: The Rheinhessen region of Germany has been growing Grauburgunder (a.k.a. Pinot Grigio/Gris) for hundreds of years. In this bottling, we see the influence of the lighter Italian style of the grape rather than the richer, sometimes sweeter, German style. Bordered by the Rhine and Nahe rivers as well as the Haardt mountains, the Rheinhessen is known as the ‘land of the thousand hills’, the perfect place for growing grapes to make a clean, refreshing Pinot Grigio!

Producer: Dachshund Wines was born out of a passion for dachshund dogs (of course) and quality German wine. Brett and Debra Halby’s love for their rescued Dachshunds provided the inspiration, and through a partnership with the Moselland Co-Op, the vineyards of the Rheinhessen region provided the wine. The Halbys find that supporting the work of dachshund rescues and breed enthusiasts is the most rewarding part of the Dachshund Wines mission.

Availability: Dachshund Pinot Grigio is available in the Germany section of your local LCBO and is $2.00 off until June 21. That’s a good reason to pick up a bottle for your furry friend as well as for you!
