Wine of the Weekend

Cantine San Marzano Vindoro Negroamaro 2014

Easter and Passover both kick-off on Friday and so does the first long weekend of spring (or ‘mud-season’). If the weather holds over the weekend, you may even be firing up your barbeque. Whether you are celebrating old traditions or starting new ones, a good bottle of wine is welcome on any table.

Tasting Notes: Vindoro is 100% Negroamaro and is bursting with cooked black fruits like plums and blackberries along with spicy oak notes and touches of balsamic and liquorice.

Enjoy With: Pasta and sausages in tomato sauce, pizza, pulled pork sandwiches or anything off the grill with a spicy-sweet BBQ sauce.

Style: A rich, full-bodied red which is deep, dark and intense.

Terroir/Region: If Italy is a boot, the Salento peninsula is the back of the heel, and part of the Puglia region. Puglia produces over half of Italy’s olive oil alongside many of its best wine values. Salento wines are normally made entirely of Negroamaro (like the San Marzano Vindoro) which is perfectly suited for the hot Mediterranean sun and cool sea breezes, leading to rich and balanced wines.

Producer: In 1962, 19 grape growers from San Marzano, whose families had farmed the land for generations, combined their efforts to establish Cantine San Marzano. Through the decades this cooperative has grown using modern techniques to produce elegant wines, without forgetting the obligation to the old Apulian wine traditions.

Availability: San Marzano Vindoro Negroamaro 2104 will be released into your local LCBO Vintages section on March 31, but many stores will already have the wine on shelf.  Vindoro will also be available for online ordering as of March 31.
