This month your waterfront is welcoming back the first major international event to Tāmaki Makaurau since the America's Cup. Read on to find out what else is coming up this month. Ngā mihi The Your Waterfront Team World Rally Championship ready to hit the roadWorld Rally Championships will soon be making a pit stop in Wynyard Quarter during its New Zealand stopover from 29 September – 2 October. The racing stages will be located around the Auckland and Waikato regions, and the Repco rally village and Century Batteries service park will be located on the waterfront. Soil remediation works to start on Wynyard Point shortlyWynyard Point is an area that will be one of the most important regeneration projects in the city over the next 10-20 years. Previously the site was known as the ‘tank farm’ due to its history as an oil storage depot for Shell, now it will be the location for an urban park alongside mixed-use development. Before any construction can take place, work needs to be completed to remediate the site (soil and groundwater) due to the contamination caused by previous uses. From October 2022, contaminated soil will be excavated, sifted, turned and placed in large piles. Pipes will be inserted inside the piles and air will be pumped in to speed up the natural process of breaking down the contaminants. The soil will be monitored by Shell and Auckland Council to track progress and once remediated it will be spread back throughout the site. This consented methodology is the most sustainable method and minimises the need for off-site disposal and replacement soil. Vos Boatshed recognised for its maritime merit The Property Industry Awards were held on 12 August and the Vos Boatshed restoration project received a merit award in the heritage and adaptive reuses category. Between 1994 and 2018 the shed was not maintained and began to deteriorate. So, to avoid losing this important maritime treasure forever, Eke Panuku worked to restore the shed back to its original condition. Now restored, the Vos Boatshed is managed by the NZ Maritime Museum and will be used as an active boat building space to keep the craft of wooden boat building alive. Stay tuned for announcements from the NZ Maritime Museum.
