Women and minority students receive ESA Foundation scholarships

As part of its continuing efforts to promote diversity in the video and computer game industry, the ESA Foundation recently awarded scholarships to 30 women and minority students from across the country. The students received a total of $90,000 to pursue computer and video game-related degrees at accredited four-year colleges and universities. Since 2007, the ESA Foundation has awarded nearly $700,000 in scholarships to over 230 recipients.

This year’s recipients come from 16 states and Puerto Rico. Each student received $3,000 to advance their education in subjects including game art and design, computer animation and virtual technology. Teresa Ibarra, a San Francisco, Calif. resident, was selected among this year’s recipients. Studying Computer Engineering at the Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif., Ibarra questioned whether – as a minority woman – the field of study was the right fit for her. Check out her video below to learn how winning a scholarship helped boost her confidence.

ICYMI: ESA Foundation and Extra Life Partner to Raise Funds for Children’s Hospitals

ESA Foundation is excited to continue its partnership with Extra Life and to once again offer the ESA Foundation Extra Life Challenge to help encourage gamers’ fundraising efforts during Extra Life 2015 on November 7. Since 2011, the ESA Foundation has proudly supported the 24-hour video game marathon and fundraiser that benefits Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country. Since 2008, Extra Life has raised more than $14 million to help provide pediatric health care to every child in need, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

“Video games have a tremendous ability to entertain, heal and bring us together. It is only natural that we leverage this power – and the gamer community’s generosity – to help raise funds for children’s hospitals,” said Rich Taylor, senior vice president of the ESA. “We are proud to continue our partnership with Extra Life to support local communities across North America.”

2015 Grantees of the Month

ThanksUSA

As a way to thank the men and women of the U.S. armed services, ThanksUSA provides college, technical and vocational school scholarships to the children and spouses of military members. ThanksUSA, which stands for Treasure Hunt Aiding Needs of Kids and Spouses of those serving the USA, began in 2005 as a “brainblast” of two sisters, Rachel and Kelci Okun. As of today, ThanksUSA has provided over 3,700 scholarships and awarded more than $11.1 million. To support ThanksUSA’s scholarship program, the ESA Foundation will award 10 ThanksUSA/ESA Foundation scholarships this fall.

A major component of ThanksUSA is its American history game, Treasure Hunt, which reminds players of the freedom and values sustained by our heroes in uniform. ESA Foundation has proudly supported Treasure Hunt since 2009, and most recently provided grant funding for TreasureHunt10: World War I.
