Dear Subscriber

I can't help but feel proud as I survey over 117 paintings in our gallery and studios, plus clay sculptures and walls filled with children's drawings and paintings. These works make up our current exhibition and reflect just a sample of the outstanding work our students have achieved this year. After four years, the quality just gets get better and better!

It has been an amazing year at Art Est. Highlights include being part of the Head On Photo Festival, The GreenWay Arts Prize, and Sydney Fringe Festival, welcoming the RPA Sydney Cancer Centre gals to their monthly art workshop, supporting 25 community fundraising events and mounting twelve different exhibitions in our gallery.

Art was clearly a favourite activity for more than 1150 children who joined 129 school holiday workshops, and through 2011 over 1000 students of all ages unleashed their inner artist in 135 term classes or workshops. Wow!

This week marks the end of Term 4, with our pre-Christmas holiday programs for kids starting up next week. We've launched our program for summer and Term 1, 2012 and look forward to another action packed year of art!

There's always a lot happening behind the scenes at Art Est. to enhance your art experience. Look out for some changes to our website and to the studio entrance in the new year that will both, (in very different ways) make it even easier to access Art Est.

We'll be closing for a short break from 21 December - 7 January. I wish everyone a very happy and safe Christmas and look forward to welcoming you to continue your art journey at Art Est. in 2012.

Kind regards

Jennifer McNamara, Director

2012 Program Launched

The program of term 1 courses for kids and adults has now been launched, with some new tutors, new courses and new directions.

We welcome new tutor Matilda Michell, who is a graduate of the National Art School, and among other prizes won the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize, South Australian Museum in 2009. Inspired by Goya and Velazquez, she will bring her classical approach to painting in teaching Foundations of Art and Painting after the Masters at Art Est.

Alana Ambados and Kieth Yap, both in their final year of Bachelor of Art Education at COFA, join our team of children's tutors. Kids are in for a treat with their fun and  innovative programs for 2012 looking at Art-House, Architec-tives and The Art of Food to complement our regular courses!

Linda Bowden is packing some Picasso fun into art for both kids and adults! If you've seen the Picasso Exhibition at the AGNSW, then you'll be inspired to create some Picasso-style drawings, paintings, collages and relief sculptures in these 8 week courses. Kids class is 12-1.30pm and adults from 2-4pm on Saturdays.

We also introduce Play with Clay (ceramics) classes for kids or adults with Jane King. Ochre Lawson, who also teaches life drawing at the AGNSW, will be tutoring Drawing and Painting from Life on Wednesday evenings.

There's much to choose from, so find out more here:

Summer Holiday Art

With the long summer holidays approaching, it's time to plan some creative fun for yourself and your children, or grandchildren!

There's a great program of holiday workshop for kids before Christmas 12-20 December (so you can finish your Christmas shopping) and then from 16-25 January. Book ahead to make sure your children join their favourite workshop, and if your plans change, don't worry - just let us know and we can swap them into a session on a different day.

But the kids shouldn't have all the fun! Our Summer Art Series for Adults is on from 9-15 January, with workshops held during the day (10am-3pm) or evenings (6.30-9pm), so you can still get to the beach, go to your friend's barbecue, and do some art while on holidays. Places still available, so explore the program and make your new year's resolution a creative one.

Art Est. Group Exhibition

With over 117 works, plus the claywork, drawings and paintings of our younger artists, this must be our biggest show yet! The opening on Sunday was a great celebration of achievements in art. Lucky door prizes were drawn throughout the afternoon, and visitors enjoyed demonstrations in watercolours, printmaking, photography, pastels and drawing. The cupcakes and bubbly were popular, and artworks were snapped up for Christmas gifts.

The exhibition continues until 16 December, so we look forward to welcoming you to the gallery to see the show.

Art Est. Tour to Italy and France

An exciting event in 2012 is our first art tour to Europe! We are currently finalising plans for a two week group trip to Italy and France, departing in early October.  Visiting the picturesque hill top towns of Perugia and Tuscany,  then down to Nice and St Paul de Vence in France it will appeal to lovers of art, culture and food!

The aim of the tour is to immerse ourselves in art - with time to sketch and paint the beautiful panoramas and quaint villages, to meet local artists in their studios, visit artisans markets, museums and art galleries and go behind the scenes. The itinerary will be relaxed, allowing you time to explore the culture of each of the historic and artistic places we discover. You will be encouraged to pursue your own creative projects and participate in specialised art workshops as well.

The program is being organised with ATI Tours and we are currently inviting expressions of interest from art lovers to join this tour.
