Meatless Wonder

We love Amy’s Bistro Burgers (featured in our Vegetarian Burger recipe), because they achieve the near impossible — a veggie burger that tastes great but is also gluten-free and contains no dairy. Amy’s veggie burger is made with organic brown rice, pinto beans, organic vegetables, mushrooms and a touch of barbecue sauce — you’ll swear they taste fresh from the grill!

A Pocket Full of Delicious

Planning to try out our Lamb Burger recipe? Just Natural Pita Pocket Bread makes a great bun-stand-in — we also like them for sandwiches, because they are organic and contain no cholesterol, saturated fats or preservatives.

Barbecue, No Bugs

Keep the creepy-crawly-flying-thingies away and enjoy your barbecued burger in peace. All it takes is a couple of Tag Citronella Candles. They come in a variety of sizes, including tealights and small and large pillars, and they are great for telling bugs to, er, bug off.

Morse Playground Dedication

August 16th, Elk Grove CA

On August 16, CSD Playground Partners and volunteers will dedicate the new 15,000 sq. ft. community playground at Morse Park in Elk Grove, CA. The dedication will officially open the playground section, skate elements, bocce ball, horseshoes, and a portion of the fitness track. The playground also features a water-spray park, butterfly garden, and so much more for kids. 4th Annual Village Feast

August 23rd, Davis CA

Presented by Slow Food Yolo and benefiting the Davis Farm to School Connection, this year's Village Feast takes place at Davis Central Park ( 4th and C streets in Davis). Aperitifs at noon, followed by lunch at 12:30. Nugget Market is thrilled to co-sponsor this fundraiser in support of school gardens, organic-farm field trips for kids, and more. Cowpoke Turkey Burger

Ground turkey and chicken are great alternatives to the traditional all-beef burger. Flavors of chili powder, cumin and dried oregano in the patty mixture add a little Tex-Mex flair to the burger. Corn–a-copia Summer

Corn-on-the-cob holds high status as a standard at summer barbecues and picnics. This ancient grain can be traced back more than 6,000 years in Mexico, and it is loaded with refueling nutrients that are crucial for active folks. One cup of cooked corn (about 1 1⁄2 ears) packs 40 grams of carbohydrates, a vital fuel for muscles, and 4 grams of mostly insoluble fiber, which promotes healthy intestinal tract function. Corn also supplies a wealth of B-vitamins such as folate for heart health and thiamin for efficient carb-burning during exercise. The yellow color of corn comes from a cancer-fighting compound call beta-cryptoxanthin, which can help lower your risk of several cancers when consumed in corn and other sources, such as pumpkin.

Select ears of corn with fresh-looking husks and plump kernels on the inside. Soak ears of corn for a few minutes in water (keeping the husks on) and grill on medium-low heat, turning every few minutes until tender (about 10-12 minutes). Remove husks and enjoy with freshly ground salt and pepper.
