Good morning.

Whether you’ve been with your team for years or you’re stepping into a new community that needs change, you can feel when something isn’t right. Morale is low, communication is fractured, and the work feels harder than it should. Every day feels like an uphill battle. Turning it around isn’t about wishful thinking—it’s about leadership. It’s about setting a clear direction, holding people accountable, and staying relentlessly focused on what matters. Here’s how you do it.

Elevate Your Leadership

1. Identify the root causes

Before you can fix the problem, you need to understand it. Is it burnout? Lack of clarity? Unresolved tension? Talk to your team. Listen more than you speak. Patterns will emerge, and once you identify them, you can start making changes that matter.

2. Rebuild trust through transparency

If trust is broken, everything else falls apart. Own the challenges. Be direct about where things stand and where you’re headed. If mistakes were made by leadership or staff, acknowledge them and move forward. When people trust that leadership is honest, they’re more likely to buy into the vision.

3. Communicate with purpose

Clarity drives action. If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. Narrow your focus to the top three goals for your community. Then, go further—break those down by department. How does nursing contribute? What about therapy? Dietary? Every single person needs to understand how their work moves the needle.

Daily huddles are key. This isn’t just about updates—it’s about reinforcing the mission. Every day, revisit those three goals. Discuss the lead measures that will drive success. Leadership is a drumbeat. If you’re not relentless and consistent in your messaging, don’t expect anyone else to be.

4. Empower and support your staff

People work best when they feel valued. Recognize wins—big and small. Give people responsibility, not just tasks. Invest in their growth. When staff feel supported, engagement increases. Engaged teams don’t just meet expectations—they exceed them.

5. Set small wins to build momentum

Your top three goals won’t be achieved overnight. Break them into tangible, measurable progress points. Define what success looks like this week and this month—not just over the next year. Then, celebrate progress. Even small wins generate energy and commitment.

6. Lead with consistency and empathy

Your team looks to you. How you show up determines how they do. That means:

  • Rounding – Be visible, be present. Talk to staff where they work.
  • Working alongside them – Understand their challenges firsthand.
  • Active listening – Take feedback seriously and act on it.

This isn’t about micromanaging—it’s about leading from the front. People don’t follow titles. They follow leaders who show they care.

7. Reinforce a positive culture

Culture isn’t about posters on a wall. It’s about behavior—what’s encouraged and what’s tolerated. Recognize and reinforce the right behaviors. Address negativity before it spreads. A strong culture isn’t something you hope for. It’s something you build every day.

8. Be relentless with your expectations of attitude

Mistakes? They happen. Errors? They’re part of the job. What you cannot tolerate is a bad attitude.

You know the type. Negativity, resistance, toxicity—it’s like poison to a team. Address it immediately. Be fair, but be firm. A strong team isn’t built by ignoring the people who drain its energy. The right attitude isn’t optional—it’s the standard.

The takeaway

Turning around a struggling team isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely possible. It starts with clear priorities, consistent leadership, and an unwavering commitment to the right culture. Your team will follow if you lead with focus, energy, and accountability.

Start today: one conversation, one decision, one step at a time.
