Weszeli ‘Felix’ Gruner Veltliner 2019

Were those Canada Geese flying north? Is that a crocus, or maybe some tulips breaking through the ground? It must be spring: the LCBO is starting to release more white wines that are primed for patio sipping! These crisp, light, refreshing whites are starting to pop up more and more and we’re loving them! This week we selected the 2019 Weszeli ‘Felix’ Gruner Veltliner. It’s an easy one to spot – just look for the Austrian guy on the bottle, who we’re calling Felix, with a mountain for a hat.

Tasting Note: Felix has a classic Gruner Veltliner character with a refreshing style and flavours of lemon, yellow apple, white pepper and subtle green veggie notes.

Enjoy With: Spring salads, roasted veggies, poultry dishes, schnitzel or pork sausages.

Style: A light-bodied, dry white wine.

Terroir / Region: Austria is home of the Gruner Veltliner grape; a white grape that produces refreshing, clean, fruit-and-mineral-focused wines that are amazing pairings for summer meals. It is one of the few wines that can work well with asparagus, making a natural match for a plate of Austrian Spargel (white asparagus) and Schnitzel. Makes you wonder why you aren’t drinking more Gruner already!

Producer: A former city-slicker, Davis Weszeli struck out with one clear goal – to feel closer to nature. He discovered his calling in the form of a traditional Kamptal winery in 2011, and from then he has been on a mission to create authentic, unique wines while always prioritizing sustainability and a principle coined by Davis himself, “Terrafactum”, the importance of the unique nature of the earth and terroir of Kamptal.

Availability: The 2019 Felix Gruner Veltliner is available in the Vintages section of your local LCBO and for online ordering tomorrow, but a few stores may already have it on the shelf. Go find Felix!
