Workshop 1: Indigenous Workshop

Are you passionate about improving the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and want to connect with others who share this passion from around Australia and overseas?

We invite you to connect, share your issues, and work with others to identify opportunities for solutions at the 2016 AHPA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pre-conference workshop.

Time: 10:00 – 15:00
Venue: Rendezvous Hotel Perth
Price: $100 per person for Registered Conference Delegates

$120 per person for Workshop Attendees only. 
Includes arrival tea and coffee, morning tea and lunch

Workshop 2: “Honey or Vinegar? How to change politicians’ minds”

Presented by Professor Mike Daube AO, Curtin University

From Indigenous health issues to more budget for prevention to a sugar tax; there are plenty of election issues to choose from — and on all of those issues, public health advocates push politicians to make a statement and take a side. 

This workshop will focus on how to effectively change a politician’s mind. Issues such
as the political process, drivers for influencing politicians and media framing of public health issues will be discussed. 

Time: 10:00 – 12:00

Workshop 3: Intervention research
– how to asses diet and diet behaviours?

Presented by Associate Professor Deborah Kerr
and Dr Christina Pollard, Curtin University.

This practical workshop is designed for Health promotion practitioners and researchers who wish to measure diet but are not sure where to start.

  • Provide an overview dietary assessments methods for individuals and populations
  • Examine the pros and cons of dietary assessment methods, including new technologies
  • Provide an opportunity for participants to evaluate dietary assessment method for use in their own context.

Time: 13:00 – 15:00

Workshop 4: Media and New Technology in Health Promotion

Part One:
“Ottawa Charter in action at the community level
- A simple way to utilize media”

Presented by Dane Waters, Celeste Larkins and Ross James
Health Communication Resources Inc

This practical two hour workshop will provide an overview of community service announcements, one of the strategies we use to engage communities and service providers and community media in a partnership. 

Participants will be involved as community members and service providers to experience first-hand the process of developing a community service announcement that can be broadcast on local radio and social media.  Come along to find out more!

Part Two:
“Mobile technology in Health Promotion”
Presented  by Becky White and Dr James White 
Reach Health Promotion Innovations

This session will present a broad overview of the app development process, from idea
to finished product, and beyond. Different approaches to design, development, evaluation and dissemination will be discussed. You will see examples of successful mobile health projects and interventions, and share their experience and observations of what works, and common pitfalls to avoid.

Attendees will leave with a better idea of the role that mobile technology could play in supporting their health promotion goals. Those with a specific project in mind will leave
with concrete first steps to take in making that project a reality.
