Wine of the Weekend

Cottage Block Merlot VQA

It’s Ontario Wine Month at the LCBO which means it’s the perfect time to taste what Ontario has to offer. Ontario has a large and constantly growing wine industry that creates some of the most exciting wines the LCBO sells. The Niagara Peninsula encompasses approximately 55% of Ontario’s VQA wineries including this week’s wine, the Cottage Block Merlot VQA. Just as the famous jingle says, “Good things grow in Ontario!”.

Tasting Notes:  Look for aromas of bright cherry and raspberry with vanilla and hints of dark chocolate, mint, mocha and cedar. It’s fruit forward with lush forest berry and plum on the palate with a touch of chocolate and cocoa bean. The full rich palate and cleansing acidity leads to a finish with great warmth and length.

Enjoy With:  A hearty flavourful meal of lamb or beef.

Style:  Medium-bodied, fruity red wine.

Terroir/Region:  The Vintner’s Quality Alliance or VQA designation on the label and capsule ensures that all the grapes used in this wine were grown in Ontario. The grapes for this Merlot come from a special block of vineyards in Niagara-on-the-Lake where the original cottages were built. This “Cottage Block”, with the warming influence of Lake Ontario, grows the special grapes that go into creating this premium wine.

Producer:  Strewn’s winery is located just outside Niagara-on-the-Lake on what was the old Niagara Canning Company. For 20 years, Strewn has been committed to producing premium wines from grapes grown in the Niagara region. The Cottage Block Merlot brings a special piece of its history to life, while demonstrating its commitment to creating enchanting wines.

Availability:  Cottage Block Merlot is available year-round in the Ontario VQA section. Pick up a bottle before October 8 and save $1.00 on this fine VQA wine!
