MBA Profiles in Excellence!
![]() Matt Foreman, MBA 2013, talks to us about his summer internship with AT&T in Chicago in their Leadership Development Program.
Q: Why did you choose to intern with this company? A: In my work experience prior to pursuing my MBA, I was the GM of a ~300 person company. I was autonomous in my decision making, and reported directly to the owner. I wanted to use my internship as an opportunity to get experience in something that was new to me. I decided to pursue a position working for a Fortune 15 company, where I needed to navigate all new challenges.
Q: What was the most important thing you learned? A: In my previous position, I was at the top of the management pyramid. For success in my summer position I had to learn how to motivate and get commitment from individuals for whom I had no formal authority. In addition, I learned that much of the work that gets done at a big company like that happens via a personal network rather than formal channels. Coming from my first year MBA, I had networking engrained into me and if I return to AT&T I already have the foundation of a strong network.
Q: How much emphasis did you place on networking when conducting your internship search and what were some of the key resources and/or events you found to be most helpful? A: I did a lot of networking in advance of securing my internship. I thought is was important to try and always meet new people and learn about their professional history and current position. There are so many different opportunities out there that meeting diverse people is the best way to learn of them. I attended many BCS sponsored workshops and information sessions. I also made some good contacts at the Midwest MBA Career Fair, which I remain in contact with for full time opportunities.
Thanks Matt for sharing and good luck with your post program job search!
