Fostering a Community of Adoption Scholars
The topic of adoption arises across many fields of studies, including social work, psychology, anthropology, and, of course, literature. Pitt’s English department has empowered a number of writers and scholars in the field of adoption studies, spearheaded by professor emerita, Marianne Novy. Some students who studied and graduated from Pitt’s MFA program have gone on to publish books that delve into the complicated experience of adoption, including Jennifer Kwon Dobbs (MFA 2001), Lori Jakiela (MFA 1993), and Jan Beatty (MFA 1990). <more>

Joy Priest: Bringing Expression and Power to Pitt English
Joy Priest, a scholar, writer, poet, teacher, and leader, came to Pitt in 2023. Assistant professor in the English Writing program and curator of Community Programs and Practice for the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics (CAAPP) at Pitt, Priest uses her creative abilities to empower students’ self-expression. <more>

Pulitzer Poet Brandon Som and the “Strained Echo of Etymology”
Pitt MFA alumnus Brandom Som (2002) made a virtual visit to Pitt this past fall, joining students in my “Readings in Contemporary Poetry” class to discuss his collection Tripas (University of Georgia Press, 2023), which was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 2024. The class had been closely reading the book with interest, knowing Som had once walked the same campus they did. <more>
