renters Insurance

House in HandsIf you rent a house or apartment and think that your landlord is financially responsible when there is a fire, theft or other catastrophe—think again.

Your landlord may have insurance to protect the building you are living in. But your landlord’s policy won’t replace your personal possessions or pay for your living expenses while the building is being repaired.

The only way to protect yourself financially against disasters is to buy a renters insurance policy.

Renters insurance, sometimes referred to as tenants insurance, includes three basic types of protection:
  • Personal Possessions
  • Liability
  • Additional Living Expenses

Can I Get Insurance If I Rent My Home?

Building FireRenters insurance provides financial protection against the loss or destruction of your possessions when you rent a house or apartment. While your landlord may be sympathetic to a burglary you have experienced or a fire caused by your iron, destruction or loss of your possessions is not usually covered by your landlord's insurance. Because in most cases, renters insurance covers only the value of your belongings, not the physical building, the premium is relatively inexpensive.

By purchasing renters insurance, your possessions are covered against losses from fire or smoke, lightning, vandalism, theft, explosion, windstorm and water damage (not including floods). Like homeowners insurance, renters insurance also covers your responsibility to other people injured at your home or elsewhere by you, a family member or your pet and pays legal defense costs if you are taken to court.

Renters Insurance Checklist

Check ListIf you rent a house or apartment, your landlord’s insurance will only cover the costs of repairing the building if there is a fire or other disaster. You need your own coverage, known as renters or tenants insurance in order to financially protect yourself and your belongings.

Renters insurance includes three important types of financial protection:
  • Coverage for Personal Possessions
  • Liability Protection
  • Additional Living Expenses
The following checklist can help you choose the right coverage when you are shopping around for renters insurance or speaking with an insurance agent or company representative.

If Your Child Is Headed Off To College

College StudentRemember to Study the Insurance Implications

The parents of college students moving to on-campus or off-campus housing should review their insurance policies to make sure their children’s personal possessions are covered while they are away at school, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).

Before a child heads off to college the I.I.I. recommends taking the following steps:

  1. Create a ‘dorm inventory’—a list of items the student plans to bring to school, along with its estimated value.
