We have received many questions about the name of Alaska’s biggest treasure and the tallest mountain in North America, officially being changed from Mount McKinley to Denali.
Hundreds of years before Alaska was even a state, the people of the region knew the mountain by its Athabascan name, Denali. For decades many Alaskans have fought the original switch from Denali to Mount McKinley. While they had the highest respect for the former president, they had trouble understanding why a place that was so important to our history and heritage would be named after a man who had never stepped foot in the state of Alaska.
Experience Alaska with us and you too might see why most Alaskans see the change as a major sign of recognition and respect for Alaska and its Native people that comes just in time for the 2016 Centennial celebration of the national parks.
