Conserving Outdoor Water Use

Most of Texas, including Cedar Park, is now in an "exceptional" drought, indicating the highest-level of drought conditions. As daily temperatures continue to rise above 100 degrees and lake levels further decline, the City of Cedar Park has implemented a mandatory twice a week watering schedule. This means the previous voluntary outdoor watering schedule for residents and businesses is now mandatory and water waste is prohibited. However, watering with handheld watering devices that automatically shut off at all times on all days is permitted.

In the summer, outdoor water use can account for up to 80 percent of home water use, and about half of that is wasted due to over-watering, broken sprinklers or water runoff, according to the Texas Water Development Board. "Drought Proofing Your Landscape" and "Keeping Your Lawn Alive During Drought" are two great resources for preparing and managing your landscape for drought conditions. Visit the Water IQ website for more tips on conservation.

Water-Thrifty Landscapes

Conservation is an integral part of Cedar Park’s identity. Earlier this summer, the City of Cedar Park launched the Water-Thrifty Landscapes website showcasing beautiful water-wise Cedar Park landscapes. These landscapes highlight easy, everyday ways to have a beautiful yard while efficiently using water — a great way to keep your lawn healthy during the drought.

In addition, the Water-Thrifty Landscapes website has a contest for Cedar Park residents to enter for the chance to win valuable local prizes.

Grand Prize:

  • $1,000 credit to purchase tickets to any event at Cedar Park Center
  • Yard featured on the Cedar Park Water-Thrifty Landscapes website

Runner-Up #1:

  • 2 tickets to a Texas Stars home game
  • A Zamboni ride at the Texas Stars game

Runner-Up #2:

  • 4 courtside seats to an Austin Toros home game
  • Participate in the Fan Tunnel during the Austin Toros pre-game introductions

To enter, complete the contest form explaining how your yard is water-thrifty and why having a water-thrifty yard is beneficial. Submitting a photo is also encouraged. But hurry – the deadline to enter is September 16.
