Free Workshop:
Classical Illustration vs. Contemporary Illustration

We're hosting a 2-hour workshop in Edmonton led by Dianna Bonder, the 2016 Joanne Fitzgerald Illustrator in Residence.

The Illustrator in Residence program launched at the Toronto Public Library in 2013, and has become a key annual event in the children's book community. Dianna's residency brings her to the Edmonton Public Library's Stanley A. Milner branch from October 17 to November 10, and as part of her residency, she will be leading a 2-hour workshop at the Faculty of Extension on November 7, open and at no cost.

Topic:
Classical Illustration vs. Contemporary
Illustration

Through an in-depth study of classical composition, techniques, and style, we will compare this work with its modern day counterparts. Students will then be asked to conceptualize an idea or story by using a classical style or technique and then re-create the work in a more contemporary style.

We will discuss and explore how the two styles compare:

  • What are their similarities and what are their differences?
  • How does the style affect the story?
  • How does the style affect its potential marketability and sales potential?
  • How does the style affect the reader?
  • Does innovative illustration necessarily mean the book is more interesting or less interesting?

This workshop will appeal primarily to adults.

About Dianna

"For me, it’s simple… dreaming is believing. If
you can dream it… it can be."
- Dianna Bonder

Dianna Bonder was born in Kamloops, British Columbia, and after studying fine arts, illustration, and design in Toronto, she moved to Vancouver to work as a commercial artist. Tired of the hustle and tight deadlines of commercial art, Dianna evolved a unique style which found its way into children's books.

After the success of her first book The Pacific Alphabet in 2001, other books followed, including Accidental AlphabetThree Royal Tales, Digging Canadian DinosaursLeon's Song, and Dogabet. Dianna now lives on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, and is working on her 15th children's book.
