The OODA Loop developed by Air Force fighter pilot Colonel John Boyd has been adopted across continents and industries as one of the best frameworks for making decisions quickly, with the information available, knowing that constant re-evaluation and decision adjustments will be necessary as new data reveals itself.

The OODA Loop is an excellent framework to review and implement to guide your leaders, clinicians, and frontline employees to empower decision-making at the appropriate level of your organization.  There is nothing more frustrating to your team and your residents than situations where team members can solve problems but lack the authority or perception of their power to do so without involving leadership and delaying the resolution.

It's simple

It's cyclical

It's a continuous loop and not a list to check the boxes.  The OODA loop assumes there is always new information to observe and act upon. 

How often does your team respond to a resident who fell (observe), fill out the incident report (orient), care plan a new intervention (decide), and educate caregivers on how to implement the new intervention (act)...

And then... Nothing.

No further evaluation.  No further observation or orientation until the resident falls again.

We're not practicing an OODA Loop but rather an OODA Line with a beginning and an end.  

It's revealing

The shift in mindset will reveal blind spots and weaknesses in your processes.  For example, most falls in the skilled nursing and senior living setting are unwitnessed, revealing a significant challenge in your ability to observe and orient to the appropriate cause and resulting intervention.
