We are adopting the motto “Good Food, Good Wine, and Good Friends”. It also happens to be the modern motto of the De Bortoli family, but we’re not stealing it! We are adopting this motto because it encompasses all that we try to do with Wine of the Weekend: present a delicious wine, give ideas of what to serve it with, and let you do the sharing with friends and family. Even though the sharing part can be tricky right now, we feel this motto will serve us well, and De Bortoli’s G.S. (Gulf Station) Pinot Noir is the perfect wine to start with. Cheers to good food, good wine, and good friends!
Tasting Notes: A vibrant ruby colour and perfumed with red berries, spices and smoky oak, the G.S. Pinot Noir has a soft mouthfeel, gentle tannins, and is packed with dark fruit flavours.
Enjoy With: Grilled salmon or halibut, roast poultry or duck, pasta dishes, soft cheeses, and stews – beef bourguignon is a classic.
Style: A smooth, medium-bodied red wine.
Terroir/Region: De Bortoli’s G.S. (Gulf Station) wines come from the Yarra Valley, a wine region near Melbourne, Australia. The Yarra first saw vines in 1838 and has since been compared to France’s Burgundy region, the home of Pinot Noir. Like Burgundy, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are THE grapes here, and Yarra Pinots are the most sought-after wines from the valley.
Producer: De Bortoli is one of the first families of Australian wine, now celebrating its 90th year making wine with the family’s 4th generation now involved in the business. Its Italian roots and industrious immigrant spirit lead to great successes in its adopted homeland and the family motto “Semper ad Majora” (“Always striving for better”) guides all it does, along with the less formal motto “Good food, good wine, and good friends” – now our motto as well!
