Top of tourism honoured at WA Tourism Awards

Kimberley Wild Expeditions took out the prestigious Sir David Brand Award for Tourism at the 2018 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards, held on Saturday November 10, 2018. Tourism WA Familiarisation coordinator Emily Allen was also acknowledged at the awards as the recipient of the Sir David Brand Young Achiever Medal, which is part of the 2018 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards and presented at the WA Tourism Conference Dinner in September 2018. Among those commended on the night were the recipients of two new individual awards, also presented at the WA Tourism Conference Dinner.  These awards were for Excellence in Customer Service, awarded to Jo Naronha of Epicurean at Crown Perth, and Excellence in Aboriginal Tourism, won by Clinton Walker of Ngurrangga Tours. In addition, a host of tourism-based businesses were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals across 28 award categories.  Those that secured gold in categories one to 25 will go on to represent the State next March at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Launceston. Vasco da Gama to home port in Fremantle next season

Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV) anticipates 7,200 passengers will travel on cruises out of Fremantle on the inaugural season of new ship Vasco da Gama. The Vasco da Gama, which will home port in Fremantle, is set to visit seven Western Australian ports in its 2019-20 Australasian season. The ship can accommodate up to 1,200 guests per cruise, with some itineraries to include WA regional destinations such as Esperance, Broome, Kuri Bay and Busselton. CMV’s ship Astor is home porting in Fremantle in 2018/19 for a sixth season. Tourism WA Managing Director Brodie Carr said homeported cruise ships provided a significant boost to the State’s economy and specifically to Fremantle. Bookings open to the general public from today. Vasco da Gama’s last Australian cruise for the season will depart Fremantle on February 1, 2020. Airline awards highlight industry high flyers

Aviation safety and product rating website AirlineRatings.com has named Singapore Airlines as Airline of the Year for 2019. Part of the website’s Airline Excellence Awards, Singapore Airlines took out the title for the first time and was commended for launching the non-stop Singapore to New York service, revamped interiors, leading the way in inflight service, operational safety and new aircraft types including the A350 and 787-10. Qantas was awarded Best Domestic Airline Service and Best Lounges, while Virgin Australia achieved the title of Best Cabin Crew, and Emirates won the Best Airline Middle East/Africa and Best In-Flight Entertainment. Singapore Airlines led the top 10 airlines 2018 list, followed by Air New Zealand, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia, Emirates, All Nippon Airways, EVA Air, Cathay Pacific Airways and Japan Airlines. AHA Awards celebrate best of WA’s hospitality industry

The best of Western Australia’s hotel and hospitality industry were acknowledged and celebrated at Crown Perth on Monday night, as the winners of the 2018 AHA-Aon Hospitality Awards for Excellence were announced. About 1,000 people attended the Furphy Refreshing Ale Gala Ball to recognise venues and employees who drive excellence within the State’s hospitality industry. There were 41 award categories including WA’s Best Regional Hospitality Venue, won by Margaret River’s Settlers Tavern, and Perth’s Best Hospitality Venue, which went to Crown Perth. WA’s Best Steak Sandwich was awarded to The Merrywell in Burswood following the preliminary final in May. The full list of winners can be found here.

 

Destination WA’s summer series continues

Check out Perth’s street art and night life with Oh Hey WA, see what’s on the menu at Yagan Square, go fat biking on Broome’s iconic Cable Beach, enjoy a cray fishing experience in Mandurah, explore tropical Carnarvon and learn about World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef at the new Ningaloo Centre this weekend on Channel 9’s Destination WA. These stories have been supported by Tourism WA, together with regional tourism organisations Australia’s North West, Coral Coast, Golden Outback and Destination Perth, local operators and visitor centres, as well as MAPTO and MRA. Destination WA’s Summer Series airs in WA on Sundays at 5.30pm and nationally on Saturdays at 12.30pm on the Nine Network.

 

South West media coverage in New Zealand

Tourism WA hosted freelance journalist Mike Yardley on a media visit to Australia’s South West region in August. Mike has produced four articles that have been published across the NZ Herald, NZME regional newspapers and For the Love of Travel, with a combined monthly readership of 785,000. The articles included information on Albany’s Anzac history, Field of Light: Avenue of Honour, coastal experiences, southern forests and the Margaret River region. Read the Albany story here.

 

Feb Fever campaign promotes Perth over east

Tourism WA’s Feb Fever campaign continues to promote all Perth has to offer during the summer months to Melbourne and Sydney audiences. It will run from mid-November until the beginning of December and will highlight the 10-day crossover of the Fringe World and Perth festivals from February 8 to 17. Tourism operator scam alert warning

Tourism operators are being warned about an online scam. Operators have received emails asking them to confirm their online listing and make a payment for that listing. These emails appear to be from an STO, RTO or LTO. If you have received an email asking for payment for your online listing and are unsure please contact your local RTO or LTO. As a reminder, Tourism WA does not charge operators to be listed on its website.

 

EOI sought for Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Advisory Committee

The Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Advisory Committee is calling for expressions of interest for new committee members. The committee comprises 11 members – an independent chairperson and 10 members, including those with scientific expertise and affiliations with the local and broader community. All applicants are required to complete an expression of interest form, submitted with a current CV. For more information, call (08) 9947 8023 or email Tegan Gourlay. ATEC UK market presentation

November 26: ATEC, with the support of Tourism WA, is hosting a Tourism WA UK market presentation with Sandra Leach at Metro Hotel Perth from 4pm to 5.30pm. The presentation will cover the UK market, UK consumer trends and UK marketing activity. Afternoon tea and refreshments followed by a complimentary beverage at Red Bill bar then cash bar. NZ added to new East Coast Roadshow

May 26-30, 2019: Tourism WA’s East Coast Roadshow is being reimagined and expanded to include Auckland. Registrations have now opened for the Show me the WAy Workshop, which will visit Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. This trade engagement activity will be vital in supporting Tourism WA’s New Zealand office’s activity to support Air New Zealand’s daily direct services from Auckland to Perth, and seasonal Christchurch flights.
